Let’s be honest, most of us have grown up in the era of liquid shampoo and conditioner. And for most of us, conditioner is a must; without it our hair is dry and brittle. But why is that?
Most liquid shampoos on the market are filled with synthetic surfactants (harsh, cleansing agent), designed to strip out absolutely everything. And I mean absolutely everything: the good, the bad, the ugly. And thus, it creates the market for conditioner to synthetically add protection to our hair after everything has been stripped out.
Here, I introduce shampoo bars. “Little” concentrated bars, designed specifically for your hair. I say little, but let’s be honest, they pack a punch and weigh about 4 oz each. These bars are long-lasting bundles of concentrated shampoo that will do the job of several bottles of liquid shampoo (and in many cases, replace your conditioner too). Solid shampoo, which also makes it a great commodity when traveling because it doesn’t fall under the liquid restrictions when flying.
Here is where things go very, very differently. Nokomis Naturals shampoo bars are free of synthetic surfactants. They’re packed full of effective ingredients and essential oils, so you can lather, rinse, and repeat for gorgeous hair every time. Nokomis Naturals shampoo bars are designed to strip the excess oil and dirt from your hair, leaving behind some of the good oil your body naturally produces to give it that bounce, softness, and shine we all love. The hardest part about making the change is changing the way you think about hair care!
When I used the shampoo bar for the first time, it was hard to wrap my head around the idea of a solid bar of soap to wash my hair. But the results spoke for themselves! I was able to replace my liquid shampoo and conditioner with just one bar!* These bars don’t strip all of the good oils out of your hair, just the excess oil and dirt, for a soft, clean shine.
Commonly Asked Questions
What should I expect from a solid shampoo bar?
This is where your mind will be blown away. Wet your hair, then gently rub the shampoo bar all over your head. Set it down and then scrub your head, just like you would with liquid shampoo. The lather that builds is absolutely amazing and feels just like when you use liquid shampoo! If you find you missed a spot, just pick up the shampoo bar, rub it in that area a bit, and scrub it into lather.
How long will one shampoo bar last?
This is a common question and depends on many variables. My husband and I share a bar; he washes his hair daily, I wash my hair 1-3 time a week (I should note that since switching, I can push the time in between washes as much as 10-14 days without my hair looking oily and greasy). Each bar lasts us 8-12 weeks. The key here is to make sure it can properly drain (dry) in between uses by setting it on a soap dish, even if it is only the built in soap dish in your shower or bath tub.
Can I use Nokomis Naturals shampoo bars if my hair is color treated?
Absolutely! I use these little gems on my color treated hair (and I should note, I generally dye in red tones, which are one of the hardest to retain). My hairdresser is amazed at how well they work, and has even taken up to using these shampoo bars themselves! If I could only give you one piece of advice if you color your hair, it would be this: The secret to maintaining your color longer is to wash your hair in the coolest temperature water you can tolerate. It helps keep the hair follicles closed so the color doesn’t escape as quickly.
What about conditioner?
Conditioner is an interesting topic. We do make complimentary conditioners here at Nokomis Naturals, in each of our scents. We wish we could say you won’t need it, but some people have extremely damaged hair and require conditioner as they make the transition to healthy hair. Some people have extremely dry and brittle hair and require a conditioner. It truly depends on your hair type; only you can determine definitively if you will require conditioner.
Help! My hair feels heavy, gunky, and oily after washing it with Nokomis Naturals shampoo bar!
This is another one of those interesting nuances. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you through it:
- Did you rinse thoroughly? Remember, our shampoo bars are designed to remove the excess dirt and oil, not all of it. You need to ensure you rinse out the excess well.
- Do you have hard water? Hard water is the arch nemesis of all handcrafted soap, and shampoo bars are no different. At the end of the day, shampoo is soap. The minerals in the water cannot be broken down by natural soap and can create a film (think about the white film on your shower door or bathtub that may build up over time). Here are a few tricks.
- Baking Soda Pre-Rinse: Add 3-4 TBSP to 1 pint of warm water. Mix to dissolve. Wet hair, then pour the baking soda pre-rinse over your head. Proceed to wash your hair with the shampoo bar. The baking soda acts as a water softener, thus helping reduce the residue left behind.
- Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Post-Rinse: Add 1/8 c of ACV to 1 pint of water. Mix to combine. After shampooing and rinsing, pour mixture over hair. I usually let it sit on my head while I wash my body, then rinse out. Don’t worry, the vinegar aroma won’t stick around once rinsed out and as a bonus, it helps act as a detangler!
